Ernest Borgnine (1917-2012) is one of the finest actors ever to grace the Hollywood screen. He could play the menacing tough guy – or the lovable, bighearted lug. I like Borgnine's portrayal of Staff Sergeant James R. "Fatso" Judson in the 1953 blockbuster film From Here to Eternity, based on the classic James Jones novel.

Set in Hawaii months before the December 7, 1941, Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor, From Here to Eternity features Ernie as a sadistic, knife-wielding goon who finds his "true calling" as the Sergeant of the Guard at the Schofield Army Barracks stockade on the island of Oahu.

Check out the scene where Fatso and Pvt. Angelo Maggio (Frank Sinatra) nearly do battle at a sleazy joint called Choy's. Maggio – derisively called "tough monkey" by Judson – later ends up in the stockade, much to Fatso's grinning delight.
